How to use the Enneagram and the Fourth Way to Create your World
The Enneagram is a tool of expanded awareness that is a little bit of the esoteric, a little bit of the symbolic, and a little bit of the numerological.It has been known and used throughout millennia by esoteric schools and their students to learn how to be the master creator and directive principle to all types of processes of creation and manifestation. It is a very effective and handy tool. In times past, when two beings would meet each other on a path, they would each explain the level of their understanding of the Enneagram and the one with the most knowledge would become the teacher and the other the student. It has many layers of knowledge, meaning, and practical application. This is not the modern popularized version with personality types we speak of here, this is a simple tool with profound capacities when learned and mastered.
The application of the Enneagram has to do with the process of bringing a concept, idea, or project into manifestation. It contains a key insight about how to move through our points of resistance and procrastination that many people will repeat over and over again. Gurfjieff taught that most humans go about their lives as mindless automatons (robots), and his Work is about waking up and becoming alive. We call this walking out of the Matrix and into Life, and the path is one of Inner Work combined with other levels of application in the physical, emotional, and mental bodies of which we are comprised.
The Enneagram has deep historical roots and in modern times it has been used primarily for personality typing in popular psychology and new age circles, and that is not at all the kind of application we are talking about here. Superficially, it is used by individuals and companies to lock you into a box, a personality type, and tells you “that’s what you are;” and because “that’s what you are” in that system, you will react and respond in very predictable ways. This is, in fact, the secret behind mass mind control, to get each individual to become ingrained in patterned behavior. The macro scale control system can control masses of people when they are all “typed” and programmed to be who they are told to be, whether that is “I am a Gemini, I am a Generator, I am a Perfectionist, I am a Reformer.” The true Master stands in the center of his or her own creation, our creational capacity, and directs every intention into manifestation. The Enneagram is a tool for us to use to learn how to remember our creator capacities.
We all know of innumerable modalities of typing and slotting us into pre-determined identities - astrology, numerology, tarot, cards of destiny, and many more. These can construct one’s world (and others can learn those predictable ways and reinforce them with their projections and personal, social, and political ways), requiring each of us to be even more formulaic in the ways that we interact with our world. This actually limits you as you grow in your awareness of your capabilities. For our purposes, we are not talking about the superficial use of personality typing— the classical use of the Enneagram that Gurdjieff brought to the west in the early years of the 20th century goes deeper and is much older than that. The Enneagram has roots in Sufism, a branch of mysticism in Islam, however it is not associated with any modern religion. It is a practical map of the human psyche which we can learn to use to manifest our Will, Purpose, and Intent. In the PanTerraVida educational work and personal development processes, we apply ourselves to the foundational requirement of reanimating our Will, which society and religion have taught us to suppress and subjugate to the hive mind normalcy of the modern world. This is the Directive Principle, the True Masculine. Our work also includes revivifying and strengthening the True Feminine, the Regenerative Principle.
Gurdjieff first brought the Enneagram to the West in the early 1900s, and the fundamental teaching he emphasized with this tool was to recognize and apply our rightful position as the Master directing our creative capacities. Each of the nine points on the Enneagram in the outer circle are steps that we take on the linear process of bringing an intention into manifestation. The outer circle is the path of Time. The inner lines are outside of time and are where we stand in Eternity. Thus, the Enneagram is the balance we hold between Time and Eternity.
The pop culture theory of personality types says each person predominates in their life expression with one of nine personality types by adulthood. This is taught as a self-referencing point that helps one navigate the external environment. But in reality, we are not just one personality type. As we walk the path of Inner Work, we begin to transcend all of the typing and casting we have accrued during our time in the Matrix and we break through our limitations (often self-imposed). As such, we have all of these expressions available to us if we build our self-awareness and strengthen our Directive Principle, our Will, and learn (or more accurately to say remember) how to tap into all of our capacities within ourselves and use them to create and to walk in this world in Mastery. We are all interconnected and multidimensional and over time, every being will use the characteristics of the personality types as an integrated whole Being. Because we have all the types manifesting at different points in time under different circumstances, we can learn to use the Enneagram process in the classical sense, as it was originally intended, to create and manifest our Will, Purpose and Intent.
